The Belgian federal government

Following 540 days of negotiations among informers, pre-formers, conciliators, high-level groups and royal clarifiers, Belgium has officially announced a new federal government.
The new government is a coalition of six political parties and three political families. The Socialists (Parti Socialiste & Socialistische Partij. Anders), Liberals (Mouvement Réformateur & open Vlaamse Liberale Democraten) and Christian- Democrats (centre démocrate humaniste & Christelijk Democratisch & Vlaams) are represented on both sides of the linguistic border.

The Danish parliamentary election

Denmark bucked the current European trend towards the right in its general election on 15 September. Danes voted in a left-wing ‘Red Alliance’ coalition headed by Social Democrat leader Helle Thorning-Schmidt, defeating the Liberal-Conservative coalition, which had been in power for ten years.

Trust and Purpose Survey 2011

Burson-Marsteller commissioned Penn Schoen Berland (PSB), the global market research and
consulting firm, to carry out the Trust & Purpose survey. PSB completed 3,161 online interviews
among the general population in the following countries from 5 May to 16 May, 2011:
Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal,
Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom. Data was weighted to age and gender
demographics for each country.
Italy’s local elections – Is the sun beginning to set on Berlusconi’s government?

Italy’s ruling People of Freedom party (PdL), led by Silvio Berlusconi, has lost local elections in Milan to the opposition centre-left Democratic Party (PD). Meanwhile Naples, a key city for the centre-left, saw the election of Luigi De Magistris, the candidate of the Italy of Values (IdV) party and the Chair of the European Parliament’s Budgetary Control committee.

Portugal moves to the Right and faces an austere future
The Portuguese general election of 5 June has ushered in a new political era in Portugal. The centre-right Social Democratic Party (PSD) will lead a right-wing majority government, under Pedro Passos Coelho – but it will face economic difficulties and social turmoil in the near future.
